New Jersey Pick 6 Lotto History
The New Jersey Pick 6 Lotto was first drawn in May 1980 and originally required players to select six numbers from a possible 39. In February 1986 the matrix was changed to six from 42 and a second weekly draw was added. Then, in January 1989 the matrix was changed for a third time, now requiring players to select six from 46 numbers.
In May 1997 a Cash Option was added to the game, allowing jackpot winners to claim their prizes as a single lump sum, rather than as a 20-year annuity. The following September, the annuity structure was changed from 20 years to 25 years. In New Jersey, players must nominate their chosen payment method at the outset rather than at the time of winning, the latter procedure being the norm in most other states.
The current game, which has a six from 49 matrix and is played on Monday and Thursday, came into effect in September 2000 and offers a set prize for matching three numbers, and pari-mutuel prizes for the remaining prize tiers.
