Lotto 6/49 Overview
Lotto 6/49 was launched on June 12, 1982 and it was the only Canadian lottery game that allows its participants to choose their own numbers.
A Lotto 6/49 ticket costs $3.00. Participants must choose six numbers between 1 and 49. There are multiple different prizes to win in each draw. There is the classic $5 million jackpot for matching the six numbers drawn, the gold ball jackpot that is guaranteed to award one player at least $1 million based on the code printed on their ticket and the EXTRA prize for an additional $1 entry. Each Lotto 649 draw has four different top level prizes; the $5 million regular jackpot, the gold ball jackpot, the EXTRA top prize and the guaranteed $1million draw. Gold Ball Jackpot
The Gold Ball jackpot brings a new dimension to the top prize that is up for grabs in each Lotto 6/49 draw. The addition of this draw means that the jackpot value could increase all the way up to $70 million, instead of winning the regular $5 million top prize.
In each draw there is the main draw that selects the six balls and bonus ball. After this there is the gold ball jackpot draw where 30 non-numbered balls are placed in a drum, one of which is the gold ball and the remaining 29 are just normal balls. One ball is selected at random- if it is one of the regular balls then this ball is removed and one winner will take home a fixed $1 million prize. In the next draw there will be 28 regular balls (the original 29 minus the one selected in the previous draw) and the one gold ball, and the jackpot then increases by $2 million. This process is then repeated until the gold ball is the one selected, and then the process restarts.
The starting gold ball jackpot is $10 million and increases by $2 million every time the gold ball is not the one selected, meaning it could rise all the way to a fixed, must be won gold ball jackpot of $70 million. Every ticket you buy will have a code on it that is your dedicated entry to the gold ball jackpot, of which one in the draw is guaranteed to be a winner.
